A good squad turned up yesterday to run from the Tropicana to the top of Donard via the Black Stairs and back. Unlike the fabulous Wham song there were no free drinks but there was fun and sunshine for everyone.
On the climb Willy McKee led the club followed by Sam and Clive. This year there was also a random dog taking on the climb with us (as pictured below). I first spotted DOG on the Black Stairs and as I was hitting the summit with Newcastle men, John Kelly and Colm Campbell, it was running along side us. Rumour has it that one of Ice House spectators owned the dog and allowed it to join in the fun.
On the descent some strong running from Sam saw him catch Willy at the Black Stairs on go on to finish in third position, with Willy forth. A great result for both guys, although I am sure they were a little disappointed to finish just outside the magic 60 minute mark. After being out with injury Clive ran strongly to finish in 13th in a time of 64 minutes, or so. In the bunch behind Willy Marks and David McKee ran faster than me on the descent and caught me just after the Black Stairs. We were followed over the line by Colm, Roy, Ricky Hanna, Cecil, David, Eugene, Stewart, Peter McGuicken, Ricky C, Peter T, and Willy John Brown. For some reason our other new recruit Eddie Shannon was last seen standing watching the race in his Mourne vest in Donard Park, obviously the thought of going up the Black Stairs was too much.
Now feel free to drink in some more action shots of our heros. See y’all for some Rocky Mountain on Thursday and, hopefully, a bash at the Spelga route on Sunday.
